Marina Abramovic, The Artist is Present, 2010
MoMA held a major retrospective and performance recreation of Abramović’s work, the biggest exhibition of performance art in MoMA’s history. This performance retrospective traced the prolific career of Marina Abramović with approximately fifty works spanning over four decades of her early interventions and sound pieces, video works, installations, photographs, solo performances, and collaborative performances made with Ulay (Uwe Laysiepen).
During the run of the exhibition, Abramović performed “The Artist is Present,” a 736-hour and 30-minute static, silent piece, in which she sat immobile in the museum’s atrium, while spectators were invited to take turns sitting opposite her. She sat everyday for the three month period from when the museum opened in the morning till they closed in the evening. This original work performed by Abramovic was the longest single solo piece she’s ever performed.
