Imme van der Haak - Beyond the Body (2012)

Artist’s statement:

“My work focuses on altering the human form by affecting its figure with just one simple intervention. Photos of the human body are printed onto translucent silk which will create the possibility of physically layering different bodies, ages, generations and identities.

In a dance performance, the moving body manipulates the fabric so the body and the silk become one, distorting our perception or revealing a completely new physical form. The movement then brings this to life.”

Hey everyone! Just a reminder that this upcoming Saturday is Slow Art Day!! This annual event celebrates art through focusing on viewing art slowly in order to fully experience and appreciate the work.

Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Sign up at a local museum or art gallery.There are 260 venues and counting (all around the world)!

Step 2: Attend and Look at 5 pieces of work SLOWLY! Show up on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at your venue, pay the admission fee (id there is one) and then look slowly- 5-10 minutes- at each piece of pre-assigned art.

Step 3: Have Lunch to discuss your experience. Meet up with your volunteer host and the other participants at a pre-assigned lunch spot.

The Big Air Package is Christo’s major first public work since the death of his partner Jeanne- Claude in 2009. The largest ever inflated envelope without a skeleton, the Big Air Package is on view at the Gasometer Oberhausen in Germany through December 30, 2013.

The artist typically works in monumental scale, using a site or specific building as a point of departure for a project installation. “In this case, a 90 meter-high inflatable envelope occupies 177,000 cubic meters which are contained within 20,350 square meters of semitransparent polyester fabric kept together with 4,500 meters of rope. The 5 ton form fills the interior of a former gas tank, amplifying the ethereal quality of the space with diffused light. Christo describes the experience as ‘virtually swimming in light’ as a result of the vast expanses of fabric.” (via Designboom)

This interactive installation is a circular display that simulates the turbulence at the surface of the sun using mathematical equations. The piece reacts to the presence of the public by varying the speed and type of animation displayed. If no one is in front of the piece, the turbulence slows down and eventually turns off. As the built-in camera detects people, more solar flares are generated and the sun shows more activity. The piece consists of custom-made panels with 60,000 red and yellow LED lights.

Submergence transforms the ROM gallery space into a Mixed Reality environment where virtual and physical worlds coincide. The result is an immersive walkthrough experience that uses light to alter our perceptions of space and presence.

Imagine walking through a virtual world, where pixels on a screen are replaced by thousands of points of light floating in space. These points of light create environments, atmospheres and movement in physical space. This is Submergence, a new project by digital arts collective Squidsoup. 8,064 points of light suspended in a physical walkthrough space measuring 8m x 4m and 4m high.

Submergence is the culmination of a five year research project exploring interactive media experiences that occupy physical space.

New York-based interative artist and software developer Daniel Rozin creates installations and sculptures that have a unique ability to change and respond to the presence and point of view of the viewer. His ‘mirrors’ are made of everything from wood, trash, metal, plastic, and even fans. Daniel is Associate Art Professor at Tisch School of the Arts, NYU where he teaches classes such as ‘Toy Design Workshop,’ and ‘The World-Pixel by Pixel.’

Design Boom: “Developed by new york-based media artist aaron sherwood, ‘firewall’ stems from a performance piece being developed as purring tiger (with kiori kawai) titled ‘mizalu’, which will premiere in june 2013. during one scene in the performance dancers will press into the spandex with the audience facing the opposite side. ‘mizalu’ is about death and experience of reality, so this membrane represents a plane that you can experience but never get through. as hard as you try to understand what’s in between life and death, you can never fully know.”

Located in the Japanese garden at Tatton Park, England, this dream like sculpture is suspended in the air by three helium filled balloons. Although the bridge could support the weight of several people, in theory, insurance issues hindered the idea especially in an increasingly litigious society, so the bridge was left in the middle of the lake to deter daredevils.

“Those are all pragmatic reasons for the inaccessibility, but I also think that this inaccessibility helps Pont de Singe avoid becoming a gadget or gag at the amusement park, instead becoming poetry. I think our imaginations takes us further than any balloon.”

This interactive installation features surfaces of clear film in the air for visitors to walk, crawl, and lie in. What separates this experimental work from his older installations are the three layers of floating space for visitors to enter and engage in, directly affecting one another with their movement. In addition to the suspended installation, there is a room below it for people to view the futuristic utopia above.
