Marina Abramovic, The Artist is Present, 2010
fckyeaharthistory: Visitors were encouraged to sit silently across from the artist for a duration of their choosing, becoming participants in the artwork. Many visitors ended up in tears, frightened and stunned by the simple and timeless performance.
MoMA held a major retrospective and performance recreation of Abramović’s work, the biggest exhibition of performance art in MoMA’s history. This performance retrospective traced the prolific career of Marina Abramović with approximately fifty works spanning over four decades of her early interventions and sound pieces, video works, installations, photographs, solo performances, and collaborative performances made with Ulay (Uwe Laysiepen).
During the run of the exhibition, Abramović performed “The Artist is Present,” a 736-hour and 30-minute static, silent piece, in which she sat immobile in the museum’s atrium, while spectators were invited to take turns sitting opposite her. She sat everyday for the three month period from when the museum opened in the morning till they closed in the evening. This original work performed by Abramovic was the longest single solo piece she’s ever performed.
Alison Knowles. The Identical Lunch. 1973. Performed at The Museum of Modern Art, 2011
Knowles conceived of The Identical Lunch in the late 1960s, when her friend and fellow Fluxus artist Philip Corner noticed that she ate the same lunch every day: “a tuna fish sandwich on wheat toast with butter and lettuce, no mayo, and a cup of soup or glass of buttermilk.” Turning this habit into a performance, she asked friends to try the same lunch, often at a local diner, and to write about their experiences. The project evolved to include communal meals served by Knowles and artist’s books gathering photographs and participants’ descriptions of the events. In conjunction with the exhibition Contemporary Art from the Collection, Knowles invited Museum visitors to have an Identical Lunch with her.
